Just a Few Speaker Do’s & Don’t’s

Feel free to email me to ask about this list.

DO have someone introduce you using something YOU have written for them to read.

DO be aware of placeholders like “uh” “um” “so” “like” “y’know.” I’m not advocating you get rid of them entirely. Some are, um, natural. But three “um’s” in one sentence will distract your audience.

DO include your email and some social media ID’s on all your slides. (IF you must use slides.)

DON’T tell us you don’t have enough time.

DON’T tell us you have too many slides.

DON’T tell us you’re skipping slides.

DON’T tell us you’re running out of time.

DON’T justify your presence at the front of the room during your talk.

DON’T tell us you’re almost at the end of your presentation.

DON’T tell us you’re giving us what is usually a 2 day class in 20 minutes.

DON’T use fancy fonts in your slides because they’re likely to crash on other computers.

DON’T tell people to silence their phones. If they embarrass themselves, it’s on them.
